A year on from the sudden passing of its founder, Patrick Hawkins, the County Classics Motor Museum in the centre of Taunton town continues to thrive, and is planning a special event to remember the man who made it all happen.
The only town centre motor museum in Britain occupies the vast, rambling old County Stores department store on North Street. Patrick devoted four years of his life to restoring and converting the historic buildings into a superb museum which now houses over 100 cars, 140 motorbikes and a growing historic cycle collection.
Normally open Tuesday to Saturday, the Museum will open on Sunday August 2 to remember Patrick, with a special gathering of 64 classic cars and bikes, all belonging to local people with special memories of Patrick, in the Whirligig Car Park beside the Museum (TA1 1RZ). Additional attractions include a special Scalextric track open to all ages, set up by the North Devon & Somerset Scalextric Club.
Open 10am to 4pm, the Museum will offer discounted entry of £10/head and the award-winning Museum Cafe will feature special menus for Patrick Day, including his favourite apple cake with any hot drink for £5.
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the Museum and the Show, and to see how Patrick’s spirit lives on in the brilliant museum that he created. There is no charge to visit the display of vehicles in the Whirligig Car Park.
